?Lesson #1: SLATHER ON THAT SPF!☀️It’s 2018 and we are so fortunate that much research has been done and we have knowledge about what’s behind those sun rays. We love the healthy-looking glow that develops when we spend time outdoors and let’s be honest, nothing can beat enjoying the warmth on our skin while we lay by the pool on a hot summer day.??☀️ I admit, ??♀️ I love it too. Sunshine can be pleasant, but, the damage it causes to our skin isn’t. UVA, UVB, infrared light, SPF, free radicals… ?getting our head around all these terms takes time and can be confusing. Don’t worry, we’re going to keep it quick and simple. ? Let’s first refresh our memory: Skin is our body’s largest organ and is comprised of several layers. Within these layers lay vital structures and components, some being collagen and another protein called elastin. ⭐️COLLAGEN AND ELASTIN KEEPS OUR SKIN TIGHT.⭐️ Harmful sun rays degrade collagen and degraded collagen leads to saggy, aged, leathery-looking skin.? A large part of aging has to do with compromising these important support structures. In other words, collagen is really important. Now onto UVA and UVB. Think of it like this: “UV-AGE”?? and “UV-BURN”.?UVA rays go deep enough to reach your deep dermal layer- WHERE COLLAGEN IS MADE! (See the pattern here?) UVB rays are more superficial and lead to the burns and blisters we experience from overexposure. Both types of UV radiation can cause permanent damage to the DNA in skin cells and may even cause mutation of these cells, ?thus playing a key role in the development of skin cancer. Yikes! Not to mention, repeated exposure leads to hyperpigmentation, age spots, and sun damage. Remember I mentioned that our skin is our largest organ? Its primary purpose is protection. ? When it’s threatened by UV rays, it’s releases extra melanin for? protection to prevent burning- all because our skin ? loves us and is here to protect us. Show some love back and protect it! ? Listen – in the end, we all want to stay as youthful as possible for as long as possible. ??♀️ If a simple application of sunscreen will do that, what’s your excuse? ??♀️
